The Buffalo Nickel was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser and minted 1913–1938; Fraser modeled the Native American portrait from multiple tribal chiefs. The date position on the high relief obverse caused rapid wear, making dateless examples extremely common — coins with a readable date can fetch several times more than worn examples.
